Ron: I know it’s strange but when someone who cares for you is angry, it’s as if they are really saying “I need you.” Here’s how that works. When we feel unimportant to someone we value—a parent, a spouse—we get angry to hide feeling vulnerable. Anger on the outside is really hiding fear and desire on the inside. We want to be important.

Now, when on the receiving end of someone’s anger, what mature people do is look past the anger to the desire behind it. Instead of anger or disappointment they hear “I need you and want to be closer.” And then they move toward that desire. That’s how pain becomes peace. For FamilyLife Blended, I’m Ron Deal.
